Offered by a UF Employee Assistance Program therapist and following the Gottman Method Couples Therapy, the Building Lasting Relationships program aims to provide unique insights into the problems couples face and how they can overcome these problems to create a happier and more satisfying relationship with one another.
The program brings together six couples, who meet in person for an hour with an EAP therapist once a week for seven weeks, to explore the details surrounding John and Julie Gottman’s ‘Sound Relationship House.’ This foundational theory of The Gottman Institute gives couples the tools they need to have a healthy secure relationship.
In each session, an EAP therapist will guide couples through one level of the Sound Relationship House theory; discussing their thoughts and challenges with implementing each concept as part of a healthy relationship. Additional tools and strategies will be provided that can be practiced in and outside of the group to build or reinforce each level of the relationship house.
The Building Lasting Relationships program is open to all UF faculty, staff, graduate assistants, non-student OPS employees, housestaff/residents and postdoc associates. Participants must commit to meeting in person in the Ayers building for all seven sessions. Parking is available and there is an RTS bus stop a block from the building.
The fall semester program runs from Sept. 23 through Nov. 8. Couples will meet for an hour in the Ayers building on Tuesdays from noon to 1 p.m.
The deadline to apply to the program is Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m.
An initial screening appointment is required as part of the application process. Interested participants need to schedule a couples counseling appointment with EAP therapist Devin Shorey that takes place no later than Sept. 6.
